ASSESSING LEARNING FROM INSTRUCTION (MY ID JOURNAL)
CHAPTER 6
ASSESSING LEARNING FROM INSTRUCTION
The process of communicating
information about students achievment and progress gained from the assessment
process is typically referred to as ‘’Asssessment Of Learning’’.
There are some key steps while assessing
we should ask these questions;
*Where the learner is headed;
Critical and creative
thinker, innovator and problem solver,Effective communicator and
colloborator,Globally aware ,independent,life long learner
*Where the learner is right now?
Master of learning goals 21st
century skills
Diagnostic assessments,Summative
assesments,Formative assessments,ınformal assessments by teacher,classroom and
performance assessments.
*How to get there?
Analysis of data from formative
assessments
Use of formative assessment to
differentiate instruction, ongoing teacher assessments,Suppoort from peers
through colloborative work ,students’ learning goals and how to get there.
Teachers make decisions from begining up to the end of
instruction
1.BEGINNING OF INSTRUCTION
Placement Assessment
Determine the pre-requisite skills
degree of mastery of the course objectives and the best mode of learning.
2.DURING INSTRUCTION
A)Formative Assessment
It is used to inform
instruction.Identifies students’ needs and gives instruction on an ongoing
basis,It also provides spesific feedback to improve learning. It has strong
positive and long learning effect on learning.
B)Diagnostic Assessment
It is given at the beginning or
during instruction. It identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the
students, determine the level of competence of students, the causes of learning
problems not revealed by formative assessment.
3.END OF INSTRUCTION
Summative Assessment
It is given at the end of the course
or unit.It provides grades for accountability purposes has a weak fleeting
effect on learning.
TYPES OF ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES
A)Nature of assessment
1.MAXIMUM
PERFORMANCE
2.TYPICAL PERFOMANCE
B)Format of assessment
Fixed choices test
Complex perfomance assesment
METHODS OF INTERPRETING THE RESULT
1.Norm Referenced Interpretation
It describes students’ performance or progress in relation to others of the
same peer group age or ability.
Ex;Ali ranked 5th in the test in
Math
2.Criterion Referenced Interpretation
Describes student performance
accroding to a specified domain or clearly defined learning tasks.
Results given on a pass/fail,
competent/non competent basis.
Ex;Ayşe can construct a pis graph
with %70 of accuracy
Ahmet scored 7 out of 10 in the
spelling test.
*Validity and Reliabilty is also
important caharacteristics of good assessment.
IMPLEMENTATION
OF THE READINGS TO MY JOB
After
readıng the chapter I deeply understand the ımportance of assessing leaners. We need to
use assessment to help us plan effective and individualized instruction which
meets the student's need.
To be
useful and effective, evaluation and assessment requires planning ofcourse.
Preparing for evaluation should be an integral part of planning each lesson or
unit as well as general planning at the beginning of the school year or course.
if evaluation is not planned along with instruction, the time required for
assessment activities will most likely not be available. As Teachers we need to
know what and how much students have learned in order to monitor the
effectiveness of instruction, to plan ongoing instruction, and for
accountability purposes.
As a teacher
I should consider assessment before I begin planning lessons or projects
because it will help me to create lessons and activities that will be
beneficial to my students in a timely manner. Time can be use effectively when
I teach and focus on what my students needs to practice and master. Not on what
they all ready know. Also it give me a clear ideas on the areas that I need my
students to work on. Pre-assessments help me and the students to visualize the
areas of strength and weakness.
